Title: M o i ?
Size: 19.5 inches by 14 inches
Medium: Acrylics on Cardboard, White Cloth & Faux Flowers
Process & Intentions
(Experimentation)
I was experimenting with cardboard and acrylics since canvas with gesso was not helping me.
I don't like how the canvas sucks up acrylic paint and kind of restricts me from manipulating the paint to my liking.
I decided to take small pieces of cardboard and thought about doing a piece on cardboard, I just didn't know what.
While an idea came to me I tried acrylics of the primary colors on pieces of cardboard to see how they would react and if they stained the board in any way.
I left the pieces to rest and dry for a day or two.
I loved the end result. The way the colors didn't lose they bright and rich pigments. The texture that the cardboard itself gave the image itself was also something I really liked.
Now I had to wait on an idea...

(Process)
Couple of days later...
I free handed this piece. I wasn't expecting making it. I found a piece of cardboard laying around and I was sitting in front of a mirror. I began studying my face and decided to pull out my paintbrushes and acrylics. I wanted paint my face with very notable brush strokes, avoiding the blending technique at all costs. I got caught up with the painting that I couldn't record the beginning outline and wash of the face. The whole time I was looking at myself in the mirror while the sun hit my face. You notice every little mark in your face and the lighting on your face changes your composition, thus I had to be fast to capture the lights and shadows on my face before the sun changed of position |
Afterwards, I decided to cut out my portrait and added a background by cleaning my brushes on the empty space "behind" me.
I also used the remaining acrylic on my painting palette to not be wasteful. After that I added a couple swatches of fresh paint here and there.
I still felt my piece empty and decided to add faux flowers. I researched the meaning of different flowers. The daisy above meant purity and new beginnings so I employed it as to mark fresh start with my art and self appreciation for my work in art this year.

The edges to my portrait were rough and awkward looking.
I decided to cover it up by using cotton cloth and surrounding my face with the cloth as I made a latent allusion to a "virgin" |
Before deciding on the daisy, I tired bright red roses...
It didn't help my piece and looked rather obnoxious. Too forced. So I kept it minimal and less saturated with color by opting for just the daisy flowers |

After putting together a 1 foot by 1 foot canvas and adding gesso to the cloth I started to outline the figure I wanted to paint.
